Thermal stresses and destruction of meteoroids in the space and in the atmosphere

Anotace anglicky

The goal of this project is to develop a model of the destruction of the meteoroids by the thermal stresses in the space and in the course of their flight through the atmosphere. Up to now, only spherically symmetric cases with a very constraining assumptions about the temperature profile have been studied. The two main topics will be investigated: (i) The study of the thermal stresses related to the diurnal temperature variations inside bodies with elliptical orbits. The possible combinations of orbital, rotational and material parameters, which lead to fracture formation and the lifetime due to the thermal fatigue, will be determined. The results will improve our knowledge about current meteoroid population and its evolution. (ii) The study of the destruction of meteoroid due to thermal stresses induced by heating in course of its flight through the atmosphere, without simplifications used in the recent theories. It will correct and refine our present knowledge of fragmentation and the importance ofthe thermal stresses in the meteor physics.
