Greek tragic poetry and political thought

Anotace anglicky

It is not a heavy burden to prove the importance of theatrical performances to the Athenian democracy: ceremonies, legislation etc. But does the same apply to the tragic plays? What is their relationship to politics? We are allowed to think about this connection not only on the basis of the fact that the high officials were also playwrights or financed the performances, but also by reason of the content of the plays. The aim of this project is to show that, and how, the tragic plays reflected the dynamic political and social development and political discussion of their age. The playwrights perceived and expressed the tensions which were generated by the running of democracy. We would like to demonstrate that Aeschylus', Sophocles', and Euripides' plays contain some concepts of citizenship or civic ideology, the relationship between the individual and the state etc. Further, we want to show that their plays were a tool of the civic education which was necessary in those times when traditional values encountered the new legislative, judicial, and political practice.
