The revolution in Bohemia and the successful defense of the Hussites against the intercession of ecclesiastical as well as secular power captured the attention of contemporary Europe for decades. Thanks to its connection to the reform of the Church, theCzech question was considered not only to be a political and military matter for Sigismund of Luxembourg; it became an intellectual challenge for greatest thinkers of the time. In the period between the councils of Constance and Basel the Church's attitude underwent a transformation from the decisive use of force to negotiation with the ,heretics' on their own terms. The aim of this project is to analyze the polemical discourse carried out in texts which are not entirely known even now. The main question explores the extent to which this debate reflected the general developments which were obvious by the middle of the 15th century in attitudes toward heterodoxy and in notions of religious dialogue. The reactions of society to alternative suggestions for how to deal with the contemporary crisis will also be examined.
