Expressivity in youth slang on the background of the quest for individual and groupal identity

Anotace anglicky

The aims of the project is the research of youth slang, especially the characteristics and the functions of so-called identitary words that are conscious or unconscious symbols of whole generation, regional slang or smaller sociolects (the observer is intrigued by excessive frequency of those words or the members of some groups declare them as linguistic symbols of their group identity). This study should elucidate the reasons for their origin, variability and circulation of slang's words and idioms among young people (French and Czech), as well as intensify our understanding of perception of individual and group identity through their slang. We also intend to study the analysis of expressivity in a relation to psychological and social motivations during the integration of an individual into a group. We would like to focus on evaluative intensifiers that have not been treated yet neither in Czech nor in French linguistics systematically. The project is proposed to be finished within three years: the first two years will be devoted to field research in Czech Republic and in France and to collecting of bibliography. In the end of a second year, we propose to organize a conference named Sociolects and Identity. Third year will be devoted to editorial work. We plan the publication in French, which will cover identitary words on the same topic in Czech. At the same time, we plan to create a record library and oral corpus of contemporary spoken French.
