Anotace anglicky

This project explores recordings of Jewish liturgical music produced during the 20th century, especially those featuring professional prayer leaders (cantors or hazzanim) who lived in the Bohemian Lands. It aims to create an annotated discography of a corpus that includes commercial 78rpm records, archival broadcast material, and rare research and private recordings. The project situates the sound sources within living networks of cultural memory-making and heritagisation. Combining methods of historical ethnomusicology and multi-sited ethnography of archives, it traces them across transnational/diasporic networks of memory institutions and private collections in the Czech Republic, Israel, the USA, and Central-Eastern Europe, analysing their cultural biographies as intertwined with cantors‘ biographies and discourses of preservation and heritagisation. Bridging ethnomusicology, Jewish studies, and critical heritage studies, the project uncovers the narratives of loss, survival, and transmission embedded in the recordings, illuminating the musical diversity of the Bohemian Lands.
