Deconstruction and construction of national traditions and science in China

Anotace anglicky

The project goal is a description and theoretical analysis of modern construction of Chinese traditions and its purposes. Using detailed historical studies of typical representatives, we try to address the question of specific motivation of key actors, the role of state and ideological authorities, the mechanism of deconstruction and construction of traditions, and the resolution of conflicts between modern rationality and the particularism of Chinese national tradition. We will integrate existing theoretical results and scholarly potential of Czech sinological institutions in literary theory and Chinese history with current trends in the expanding field of history of science and technology in China. As China modernised for a long time in a peripheralposition to the centres of modern science, it is a hypothesis of this project that the symbolic manipulations with traditions are a form of coping with the forced inequality. Similar situations are found worldwide (including certain phases of Czech history), and it is thus possible to compare the perception of science, development and innovation in different circumstances, the related national mythologies, and their ideological use and abuse. Partial goals: 1. Identification of the most prominent Chinese intellectual positions regarding the relation between traditional culture and modern science. 2. Analysis of the contradiction between the destruction of traditional culture in China by modernisation, and the desire to strengthen national culture through modernisation. 3. A description and analysis of the connection between historiography and philosophy of Chinese science and the value systems (ideologies) of modernisation. 4. Identification of the influences of traditional Chinese culture in the historiography of science, the influences of imported ideologies, and of the general material and social influences of imperial globalisation under inequality.

Zhodnocení výsledků projektu

Projekt přinesl řadu poznatků o řešení konfliktů mezi moderní racionalitou a partikularismem čínské národní tradice a umožnil větší zapojení do mezinárodní historiografie čínské vědy a techniky. Na příkladu vývoje historiografie čínské matematiky a astronomie ukázal, jak symbolické manipulace s tradicí slouží k vyrovnání se s postavením relativně zaostalé země.
