Biosignature Analysis and Collection in Emitted Ice Particles from Water Worlds in Space
Anotace anglicky
The search for life beyond Earth is one of the most fundamental scientific questions. Icy moons, such as Europa and Enceladus, are promising targets because they likely harbor subsurface oceans and emit ice particles into space through clouds or surface activity. These particles may contain chemical signatures that reveal information about habitability or even potential biological processes. While current and planned missions—such as the Europa Clipper mission—focus on analyzing such material, specific biosignatures of life and reliable methods for their detection remain poorly understood. The BIOSCOPE project addresses this gap by investigating potential mass-spectrometric biosignatures and “fingerprints” of biochemical evolution present in ice particles originating from subsurface oceans. The project is developing a unique laboratory analog experiment that simulates high-speed impacts of ice particles, similar to those that occur during spacecraft flybys of icy moons. The centerpiece of the project is a new benchtop ultra-high-speed ice particle accelerator combined with a high-resolution Orbitrap-based mass spectrometer. This experimental setup enables detailed analysis of ice particle impacts at various kinetic energies and the extraction of high-resolution mass spectra along with structural molecular information. BIOSCOPE also introduces a new sampling technology designed specifically for the preservation and analysis of structural signatures generated during the impact of ice particles. At the same time, the project will build an expanded biosignature database linking mass spectrometric patterns to possible biochemical processes and evolutionary pathways. This database, together with new analytical methods, will significantly improve the interpretation of data collected by spacecraft instruments.
