HURFOR – Hurricanes and Forests: A Long-Term Perspective on Disturbance and Recovery

Anotace anglicky

This Czech-American project aims to reconstruct hurricane activity and comprehensively evaluate the impact of hurricanes on forest communities in the eastern part of the USA. The project will involve the analysis of annual and seasonal growth variability, stable isotopes, species composition, and forest structure using a large network of permanent plots. The main objectives of the project are: 1. Precise large-scale and long-term reconstruction of hurricane frequency and intensity in the eastern part of the USA. 2. Identification of oceanic and atmospheric circulations that drive variability in hurricane activity. 3. Determination of the impact of hurricanes on tree diversity and forest ecosystem structure. 4. Revealing the long-term growth resilience of individual tree species and entire ecosystems, including natural and managed forests, to hurricane disturbances. This project will contribute to a better understanding of long-term changes in hurricane activity and their implications for changing atmospheric circulation patterns, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and ongoing climate change. It also has a potential for subsequent applied research in the USA, Czech Republic, and globally. By providing access to long-term data, methodology, and scientific knowledge, the project will expand the current understanding of forest ecosystems and their interaction with climate, offering new perspectives for studying Czech forests, both natural and managed. The collaborative nature of this consortium project, covering a large study area and involving a significant number of analyses, will enhance the competitiveness of Czech science and contribute to the professional development of the involved researchers.
