Participation through Prayer in the Late Medieval end Early Modern Central Europe

Anotace anglicky

The project aims to bring a more comprehensive understanding of Central European sources related to late medieval devotion and its social structures and to emphasise their role in international research dealing with participation through prayer. The surviving prayer books, for example, provide unique information about forms of female piety and women's participation in officially promoted and controlled devotional practices. This insight into women's beliefs and religious lives is unavailable from other written sources. Czech research in medieval studies has dealt with participation through prayer only marginally. However, the Czech, or more broadly Central European, situation is particular in the global European context and, therefore, critical when discussing the development of participation in prayer in late medieval society. This specificity lies in the unusually early adaptation of vernacular languages in the Christian cult (mainly Czech and German). Another challenge presents the unique confessional situation. After the Hussite Wars, two churches, i.e. two distinctive organisations with slightly different beliefs and practices, were established in the Czech lands. In many ways, such a development anticipated the development of other European countries after the Reformation In addition to the materiality of the prayers and the visual aspects of the manuscripts or other objects on which they were inscribed, the project will also address the linguistic aspects of the prayers viewed in a broader comparative perspective with other countries. Thus, the general aim of the project will be to describe the networks connecting the users, commissioners, and artists, as well as providing information on hitherto little-described forms of immersive piety in line with the activities of the Working Groups of the COST action PRAYTICIPATE. The project applies international methodological approaches to Bohemian material and shows it in new, previously unconsidered contexts.
