Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability around the world, and is responsible for more than 5 million deaths/year worldwide. In cooperation with the European Stroke Organisation, our group built and maintains the Registry of Stroke Care Quality (RES-Q) with over 200.000 patients from 1.300 hospitals in 66 countries. RES-Q collects metrics related primarily to the quality of acute stroke care. However, the acute phase is only one aspect of stroke treatment and there are other significant metrics missing which can help to improve the lives of stroke victims after they are discharged. In the Czech Republic, data on stroke care quality are systematically captured but only on the acute phase of stroke. This project will focus on the development of two software applications to improve overall quality of care data. The first is a mobile application, which will provide a low-cost solution, allowing patients to monitor their own quality of life after stroke. To our knowledge, this type of in-depth tracking of patients is not yet systematically done. A related goal of collecting data from stroke patients through a mobile application will be to test the feasibility of this model for self-reported outcome scales. The second application will provide a cryptographic solution for linking patient data between systems, allowing us to test the accuracy of existing data in RES-Q with data from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics, and to link these two data sets with the data set collected by the mobile application. These two novel software applications represent two primary outputs of the project, and two journal publications will also be written describing the application development and data outputs, respectively. This technological solution will make more efficient use of existing data, reduce healthcare resource requirements by providing assessments without clinician involvement, and improve stroke care quality throughout the patient pathway.
