Anotace anglicky

Childbirth is a profound experience with long-term consequences for the well-being of women and their families. In line with the global shift in maternity care standards that now focus not only on mortality and morbidity but also on psychosocial aspects of care, a positive childbirth experience has been considered one of the key goals of peripartum care. Postpartum childbirth review provided by midwives is a method that promotes understanding of labor and birth while facilitating discussion about related feelings and thoughts and may, therefore, improve satisfaction with the childbirth experience. Importantly, it has been assumed that childbirth review has a positive effect on maternal mental health. However, despite being used in maternity care settings for several decades, there is a dearth of research assessing the effectiveness of this method on mental health, and no study has yet investigated its effects on parenting competencies and social relationships. Using the randomized controlled trial design, the aim of the proposed project is to assess the effect of the midwife-led childbirth review practice on satisfaction with childbirth experience and childbirth care, mental health, social relationships, parenting competencies, and future reproductive choices in mothers and fathers, while examining the effect of timing (a few days postpartum or six weeks postpartum) and a number of sessions (one or two sessions), and the effect on different groups of parents (first-time parents/experienced parents; low-/high-risk parents). This project will provide evidence regarding the effectiveness of midwife-led childbirth review which is needed to tailor policies for maternity care services. In addition, if implemented in clinical practice, midwife-led childbirth review may not only help women process their childbirth experience but also identify women at risk of developing psychiatric symptoms early postpartum, thus enabling timely prevention.
