Research on the development of cardiotoxicity following breast radiotherapy

Anotace anglicky

In the Czech Republic, a large number of individuals, especially patients with a long expected survival time after treatment, undergo breast radiotherapy. The incidence of breast cancer in women is over 7,000 patients annually, with typically 50% - 70% (according to foreign literature) undergoing radiotherapy. However, after breast radiotherapy (particularly left-sided), there is a higher likelihood of developing cardiotoxicity, which manifests long after radiation exposure (10 years or more). Therefore, in the past, the heart was not commonly considered a critical organ. The aim of the research project will be to use data from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS) on cardiovascular procedures or the incidence of specific cardiological diagnoses in a group of patients who underwent breast radiotherapy in the past and compare them with the non-irradiated population. The ÚZIS data will be available retroactively from 2010. Given the project’s start date and duration, it is expected that potential cardiotoxicity will already be observable in the patient cohort. The project will also include an analysis of diagnoses and procedures that may be related to the treatment of post-radiation toxicity. A thorough professional literature review of available sources will be conducted. If the sources contain comparable outcomes, a meta-analysis will be performed. In addition to cardiotoxicity, which will be the project’s primary focus, the patients will also be monitored for a higher incidence of lung cancer, which may be related to previous radiation exposure.
