Conference "Technart 2019", article in conference proceedings: "Identification of materials of canvas supports and ground layers in the practice of Czech painters in the 19th and 20th century" abstract: The purpose of this work is to characterize canvas supports and ground preparation layers in the practices of Czech painters from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. In this period, manufactured canvases pre-primed with ground layers are typical. However, some painters prepared supports for the paintings alone or further modified them. Few tens of paintings by famous Czech painters as Josef Šíma, Jan Zrzavý, Josef Čapek etc. were examined. The study allowed characterization of several kinds of canvases and ground layers including materials involved and its distinction for each painter. Among the canvases painted towards the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the most is made of linen, a few of cotton or jute. In most cases, the ground layers are made of mixed materials based on calcium carbonate, barite white, zinc white, lead white or in some cases calcium sulfate and other white fillers. Although the ground layers present some similarities, they are diverse. Each of them contains components which differ depending on time period and individual Czech painter. These results show differences between Czech painters giving information about various painting techniques. Obtained data may be further used within the assessment of an artwork's authenticity.
