The forgery of artworks goes hand in hand with the flourishing art market. Detecting forgeries involves a touch of mysticism, as the art world largely relies on the expertise of specialists, whose personal opinion can alter the value of an artwork by millions. Forensic examination and the uncovering of fraud by various forgers, as well as the development of tricks that make forgeries of varying quality so convincing in the art world, continue to intrigue the public. For some disputed artworks, it is very challenging to recognize a forgery at first glance, and sophisticated methods must be used to determine its authenticity. A wide range of analytical methods, including both organic and inorganic analysis, as well as X-ray radiography, are used to verify forgeries or originals. In the case of visual art, the foundation for verifying authenticity is the study of the paint layer, pigment phases, including binders, and other materials that may appear in a scientific investigation (such as frame wood, canvas, etc.). The Institute of Criminalistics of the of the Police of the Czech Republic, in collaboration with the National Gallery Prague, has developed robust and verified procedures for identifying forgeries in the field of visual arts, ensuring they are fully defensible in court. The complexity of the issue requires interdisciplinary collaboration in forensic fields, including analytical, scientific, and conservation investigations of artworks.
