The grounds of the finite element methods are presented with emphasis on their use. The different methods are all included in the same general context. The presentation follows an approach focusing on the numerical quality of the espected results in differencial equations. The purpose of this article is to supplay the necessary material for nonexpert users. Since the article is addressed to a group of readers with widely different interests I am aware that the contents of the article do not exhaust allthat its title may promise.
