Název v původním jazyce
Satellite-observed IR window features atop deep convective storms
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper addresses convective storms which exhibit cold rings, cold-U/Vs and warm areas enclosed by these cold features at their cloud top, as observed in color enhanced infrared (IR) window satellite imagery. The main focus is put on investigation of transformation of the cold-ring-shaped storms into cold-U/V ones. Direction of storm motion, warm area orientation and their time evolution were studied for three storms exhibiting the transformation. A relationship which was observed between the phase oftransformation and warm area orientation indicates similar physical processes taking place in the transformation in all presented cases. For all of them plume masking mechanism is a probable explanation of the warm area inside cold-U or at least of theobserved distant warm area (DWA). In addition, an example of storm exhibiting an overshooting top forming inside the central warm spot (CWS), without significant impact on the warm area, is shown.
