Are there nonstationarities and the Hurst phenomenon in discharge series in the Ore Mountains region?

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

This is a contribution to the non-reviewed proceedings related to the Hydrologie malého povodí 2014 conference with the following original abstract: Once a trend is detected in hydrological time series, its generating process should be considered as nonstationary. However, there is a need to discriminate between deterministic and stochastic kinds of trends. Unlike deterministic trends the stochastic trends may be eliminated by differencing. Resulting process may then be pronounced (difference) stationary. It also applies for long memory processes that are quite frequent in hydrology. The present study investigated three daily discharge series longer than 45 years. Each of them comes from different catchment situated in the Ore Mountains close to the Czechia/Germany borders. Using several estimators (maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform, Rescaled Range Statistic, Aggregated Variance Method and FARIMA model), it was found that all the series reveal the Hurst effect, which is eviden
