The variability of maximum wind gusts in the Czech Republic between 1961 and 2014
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper analyses temporal and spatial variability of monthly, seasonal and annual maximum wind gusts (MWGs) in the Czech Republic based on instrumental data. Development of observational network with measurements of wind gusts, weaknesses of wind measurements and problems with homogeneity of wind gust are described. Data of quality-checked 19 stations over the Czech Republic territory in 1961–2014, divided into three altitudinal groups, are used to study MWGs spatial variability where correlations coefficients among stations decrease more strongly depending on station distances than on their altitude. Spatial correlations are expressed better in the winter half-year than in the summer half-year. Linear trends in annual and seasonal MWGs for the best 19 professional stations divided into three altitudinal intervals show statistically significant decrease (the deepest in autumn) with exception of summer and spring (for stations above 300 m asl). Ten events with absolutely highest MWGs were selected. Spatial distribution of wind gusts for two prominent storms Kyrill (19 Jan 2007) and Emma (2 Mar 2008) are presented. Resulting decreasing MWGs trends are discussed with respect to decreasing storminess and surface wind speeds documented during the past decades in Europe as well as in other continents.
