A European aerosol phenomenology -4: Harmonized concentrations of carbonaceous aerosol at 10 regional background sites across Europe. Atmospheric Environment
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Although particulate organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC) are important constituents of the suspended atmospheric particulate matter (PM) due to their potentially large impacts on human health and radiative forcing, measurements of OC and EC in PM are much more seldom and uncertain than measurements of e.g. the ionic components. In the frame of atmospheric research infrastructures supported by the European Union, actions have been undertaken to determine and mitigate sampling artifacts, and assess the comparability of OC and EC data obtained in a network of 10 atmospheric observatories across Europe. Seasonal mean positive artifacts ranged 0.4 – 2.8 µg/m³ without denuder and 0.1 – 0.5 µg/m³ when a carbon denuder was implemented. From annual inter-laboratory comparisons, we saw that the standard deviation among all participants was generally within ± 20% for total carbon (TC), and that systematic differences in the determination of the EC/TC ratio ranged 0.5 – 1.4 compared to the reference value. Sampling artifacts and analytical discrepancies have been taken into account to build up a robust data set. From this, we established the phenomenology of carbonaceous aerosols at regional background sites in Europe. Across the network, TC and EC annual average concentrations ranged 0.4 – 9 and 0.1 – 2 µg/m³, respectively. TC/PM10 range 0.11 at Mediterranean sites to 0.33 in the most polluted area, while TC/PM2.5 ratios are slightly greater at all sites (0.15 – 0.42). EC/TC ratios range 0.10 – 0.23, and do not depend much on PM concentrations, especially in winter. Seasonal variations in PM, TC concentrations, and in TC/PM, EC/TC ratios differ across the networks, and can be explained by change in sources at certain sites.
