Stability regime in the lower part of the atmospheric boundary layer as observed by the instrument complex

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

For the North Bohemian Basin below the Ore Mountains in the northwest of the Czech Republic the specific orographic and climatic conditions are typical. Their common influence forms the local regime of stability and dispersion conditions in the lower part of the boundary layer (BL) of the atmosphere characterized by long-lasting temperature inversions and the formation of a very stable BL, especially in winter. In the warm half of the year, a significant daily course of stability conditions and terrain-influenced changes in the flow direction are observed. Described changes in meteorological conditions affected by the shape of the terrain may cause the high SO2 and PM concentration events. The contribution analyses some cases of the development of dispersion conditions based on data obtained by the instrument complex of the Tušimice Observatory (sodar, instrumented mast, microwave temperature profiler). Example 1 shows the formation of a several-day inversion, under which the pollutants emitted on the surface accumulated. The inversion layer was gradually eroded from above due to strong flow and wind shear at the upper inversion limit. Disposal of the blocking inverse layer led to a decrease in the concentration of pollutants. The development of nocturnal inversion in the warm season and its erosion during the morning PBL transition are shown in Example 2. If there were an increased concentration of pollutants in the residual layer above the inversion, there a short-term deterioration of air quality during the morning PBL transition could occur.
