Factors influencing organic carbon stocks in forest soils of the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Forest soils represent a very important pool of soil organic carbon (SOC) and proper management of these soils can thus mitigate climate change. In this research, we analyzed factors influencing the SOC stocks in temperate forests at national scale of the Czech Republic. The study found that soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in Czech temperate forests are mainly influenced by tree species composition, altitude, and forest vegetation zones. Higher SOC stocks occur under deciduous forests compared to coniferous ones, although the forest floor contributes more to SOC under conifers. The mineral soil remains the major carbon pool. SOC accumulation is greater at higher altitudes with lower temperatures, higher precipitation, and lower pH, which slows organic matter decomposition. The highest SOC stocks were found in Podzols and Histosols.
