Forest soils contain nearly half of the global stock of soil organic carbon (Corg). The proportion of more mobile stock in the upper organic layer and more stable stock in the mineral horizons of soils varies depending on soil properties, climate, vegetation cover and type of management. Since carbon storage in natural ecosystems is one of the important measures to mitigate the climate change, it is important to define management practices to increase carbon stocks in soils. In the case of forestry, there is a particular interest in the question of whether a forest ecosystem with limited human influence can store significantly more carbon, especially in its soils, or whether an intensive forest management is more favourable for the overall carbon balance. This issue is also closely related to the sustainability of nutrients, which can be depleted by a combination of acid deposition and intensive management, especially on nutrient-poor bedrocks. To enlighten the question we have compared soil properties in 10 pairs of managed and nature-protected forests growing in close proximity. The samples of upper organic layer (FH) upper mineral soil (layers 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm, 30-40 cm) and subsoil (layers 40-80 cm and 80-100 cm) were taken from the soil pit and from 5 drilled points per plot. The following chemical analyses included soil acidity, Corg, Ntot, Stot, ectractable (Aqua regia extraction) and exchangeable (BaCl2 extraction) elements. Moreover 20 extra samples of upper organic layer and upper mineral soil per plot were taken and analysed to better cover the variability in soil acidity, Corg and Ntot.
