Soil moisture development in small forest catchments affected by bark beetle outbreak – results of a three three-year study in the Jeseníky Mts., Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Higher soil moisture and higher (less negative) soil potential were generally observed in the clear-cuts compared to forest stands. Differences between younger and mature forest stands were not uniform and were influenced by the stand density and soil texture. Surprisingly, differences in soil moisture between different research sites were not significant, although the amount of precipitation increases with altitude. The region is obviously water-saturated for most of the year and local conditions are influenced not only by precipitation, interception and soil condition but also by vertical and lateral water flow in the soil profile. There were identified few drought periods (Ψ ≤ -1,5 Mpa) in the upper soil layer (10 cm) in July 2023 and August/September 2024 in forest stands, which can be connected with the stand transpiration. The results show, that in case of Jeseníky Mts. the effect of clear-cutting on soil water does not affect water balance of catchments in a substatnial way. Higher soil moisture in clear-cuts is temporary and deceasing with expanding grass cover and reforestation. We also tried to calculate the effect of “reduced” water retention capacity of clear-cuts (comparing to forests) in case of extreme rainfall and following floods in September 2024, which, however, appears to be negligible.
