Control of the status of biotic communities in streams and rivers is the subject of a developing series of river concepts. At present, the EU Water Framework Directive represents a set of characteristics and measures with the objective of improving and effectively and wisely using aquatic ecosystems, introducing the concept of an Ecological and Chemical Status of delineated water bodies. Nevertheless, characteristics of biotic communities are relatively non-sensitive to present levels of pollution, being controlled more by the presence of appropriate habitats.
