Natural radionuclides at ground water treatment plant
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
However, ground waters contain higher levels of natural radionuclides than surface waters; they are usually drinking water sources of a high quality. The monitored drinking water treatment plant (Plant) treats ground water. The raw water is aerated and then filtered through gravity sand filters and aerated again. 226Ra, contained in the raw water, is partially retained in the sand filter medium. Through its radioactive decay, accumulated 226Ra generates its daughter radionuclide, gaseous 222Rn. Thus, itis released into the treated water and into the air of the Plant hall, especially during washing of the filters. 222Rn can cause a health risk to the operating personnel or to the public. The study evaluates following factors: 222Ra and 226Ra concentrations in the raw and treated water, the amount of 226Ra accumulated in the filtration sand and the 222Rn concentration in air of the plant.
