Pharmaceuticals in wastewater and its interaction with groundwater - a case study of wastewater infiltration locality in Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Some micropolutants like pharmaceuticals are not effectively eliminated in most of current wastewater treatment plants. This specific type of pollution is therefore transferred from wastewater to surface water and successively to groundwater. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the removal of pharmaceuticals in conventional wastewater treatment plants in Czech Republic and describe the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals on locality with infiltration of treated wastewater. We analyze samples of wastewater, infiltrating surface water, sediments and groundwater for a range of 32 pharmaceuticals. The results reveal that wastewater treatment plants remove some of the analytes very efficiently (e.g. Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Atenolol) while other pass the facility to a considerable extent (e.g. Carbamezepin, Diclofenac, Hydrochlorothiazide). The soil and unsaturated zone play an important role in natural attenuation of pharmaceuticals in case of infiltration of pretreated wastewater.
