The Bohemian Cretaceous sedimentary basin is one of the most significant sources of groundwater in Central Europe. Its significance increases especially during the period of climate change, which is manifested by long droughts affecting shallow aquifers. Cretaceous aquifer is therefore a strategic source of drinking water not only for the Czech Republic but also for neighboring Germany. The ResiBil transboundary project provides a foundation for a common strategy of the optimal use of groundwater resources. The project topic was addressed by an international expert team from T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute, Czech Geological Survey and Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology. The first step of the study included additional geological and hydrogeological exploitations and unification of the geological concept on both sides of the state border. Based on a common 3D structural geological model, we created a conceptual hydrogeological model and divided the area of interest into three separate model structures. We prepared transboundary hydrogeological models. The numerical models are based on long-term data sets of groundwater levels, surface flow rates, and pumping rates. These tools enable us to simulate various scenarios of future climate changes and groundwater exploitation rates. The most important output of the project is the current calculation of long-term usable groundwater resources, which will play a strategic role in the water management of both countries. The project has also quantified their resistance to possible extreme climatic situations, especially drought sensitivity. The ResiBil project was financially supported by the European Regional Development Fund and the Program of cooperation to promote cross-border cooperation 2014-2020 between the Czech Republic and the Free State of Saxony.
