The first of the major themes was the rapidly evolving developments in minimally invasive cardiac procedures, specifically transcatheter aortic and mitral valve replacement. The second major theme was the set of major trials related to coronary artery disease. The authors highlight the relevance of coronary artery disease to outcomes for noncardiac surgery and then review recent medical and surgical advances in the management of this challenging disease. The third major theme was the set of advances in the medical and mechanical management of heart failures with large clinical trials evaluating the roles of levosimendan and centrifugal-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The fourth major theme was the release of new guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation (AF).
