Als Schauspielchef hatte er die führende tschechische Bühne durch eine kluge und mutige wie auch umsichtige Leitung aus einem nahezu akademischen Theater in eine kämpferische Thalia verwandelt, die der damaligen Situation in Europa Rechnung trug. In Zusammenarbeit mit Karel Čapek stellte Fischers Nationaltheater an die Spitze eines Kampfes, der im Falle Fischers nicht nur der nazistischen Bedrohung, sondern auch der Gefahr eines einheimischen Nationalismus galt.

Otokar Fischer as an enthusiast of czech-german togetherness devoted his lifelong work to conciliation, mutual inspiration and enrichment of cultures of both nations. In that sense he perceived also his work at National Theatre in Prague. After short intermezzo as a dramaturge in 1911/12, which had Fischer due to discrepancy concluded, Fischer devoted his energy to czech first scene in the years 1936-1938, when he worked there as a chief of the drama section.
