Dark Visions of Jan Mikulášek
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A chapter in a prestigeous collective monography on contemporary Eastern European stage direction, edited by world-renowned theatre scholars Kalina Stefanova and Marvin Carlson. Jan Mikulášek (born 1978) is one of the most remarkable Czech directors of last decade. In his dark stage visions there are echoes of existential anxieties about the present state of the world but also irony, detachment and humour. Previously the artistic head of the Brno children´s theatre Polárka, and the Petr Bezruč Theatre in Ostrava, then a frelance director regularly working with the Reduta Theatre in Brno and other theatres. Since 2013 he’s been permanent director at Prague’s Balustrade Theatre (Divadlo Na zábradlí). His choice of titles includes classical drama (Macbeth, Hamlet, Hedda Gabler, Three Sisters, Wild Duck), adaptations of movies or novels (Wuthering Heights, The Stranger, Woodcutters), but what really made Mikulášek’s name in the first place, both in Czech theatre and abroad, are scenic collages on a given topic, based on excerpts of texts, musical or film quotes, associations, connotations, developed by the actors, scenographer Marek Cpin and the director (Europeana, Hedonists, Hamlets, Personas).
