Beauty by Instinct or Daniel Špinar´s Theatre of Style
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A chapter in a prestigeous collective monography on contemporary Eastern European stage direction, edited by world-renowned theatre scholars Kalina Stefanova and Marvin Carlson. The article introduces Daniel Špinar’s career as a director since his school days at Prague’s DAMU up until his most recent works at Prague’s National Theatre, where he currently serves as the artistic director of the drama company. A bold director with distinctly stylish aesthetics, he established himself while still at school and went on to stage a critically acclaimed production of Woyzeck at Prague’s Vinohrady Theatre, but soon left this official, conservative venue to work in fringe theatres and important regional playhouses (including the Klicpera Theatre in Hradec Králové or the Petr Bezruč Theatre in Ostrava). Gradually, he made such a name for himself that he was selected to become Michal Dočekal’s successor at the National Theatre, taking the position in September 2015. While a number of his own productions as well as those of his team may generate controversy, he continues to prove that he is indeed a director with a sense of style.
