All about the books! A few ideas about the international cooperation of formal Visegrad countries with library books collections

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Central Europe belongs to the most unique regions all around the Europe. Because of the similar history connected with formal Habsburg monarchy, national conscious era, World War II events or totalitarian regimes there are many similarities also in the library book collections. Every single country creates through decades the most valuable national conservation collections, including modern or historical books, or the collections aimed for everyday readers´ usage. On the other hand, many books were damaged because of their content, lack of space or budget to preserve them. This situation opens one of the biggest issue for the current librarianship - to keep the physical collections for the future. Of course there are many risks, which make it difficult. Many documents are endangered by the degradation of paper, some have only a limited amount of copies in library collections or they are going to be damaged by frequently usage. These issues are certainly solved on the national level, but there are also some possibilities for the international cooperation especially in the Central Europe region. Collaborative projects in the area of massive deacidification, conservation of modern library collections, international registers, or sharing best practices in various areas of modern librarianship can help to keep the books more efficiently. The aim of this article is to open the discussion about the opportunities for the international cooperation in the region of Central Europe, based on the topics connected with long-term preservation of library collections, which are most important from the National Library of the Czech Republic perspective.
