The Ursuline Convent was established in Brno in 1782 on the site of the original Franciscan convent, which was abolished during the Josephine reforms on 18 January 1782. After the abolishment of the convent most of the Franciscan sisters decided to join the scholastic order of the sisters of Saint Ursula. A library was built in the newly established convent, in which a girls’ school was also opened in the same year. The library collection contained the publications situated in the original Franciscan library, as well as a number of works obtained through book auctions, donations and purchases of contemporary literature intended not only for the needs of the order, but also for use in teaching, which was the main mission of the order’s sisters. This article will focus on the establishment of the Ursuline Convent, the creation of its library, the content of its collection and also how new works were added.
