Kniha zavádí čtenáře do pestrého světa panovnických dvorů, rušných přístavů, námořních i suchozemských obchodních výprav i orientálních tržišť. Jedná se o první syntézu dějin zámořské obchodní expanze habsburské monarchie v 18. století, tedy v době po válce o španělské dědictví. Autoři líčí budování přístavů na Jadranu a v Rakouském Nizozemí (dnešní Belgii), barvité osudy obchodníků pronikajících do Indie, Číny, Arábie a Afriky, vznik a fungování Ostendské obchodní společnosti a dalších obchodních těles a budování císařských faktorií v Orientu. Neopomíjejí ani obchod s Osmanskou říší, západní Evropou a Amerikou, organizovaný z Terstu a Fiume (Rijeky), ani účast na obchodu s otroky v karibské oblasti. Na sklonku 18. století obchod habsburské monarchie obejmul celou zeměkouli.

The book introduces readers to the diverse world of royal courts, busy ports, sea and land trade expeditions and Oriental markets. This is the first synthesis of the history of the overseas trade expansion of the Habsburg monarchy in the 18th century, ie. after the war for the Spanish heritage. The authors describe the construction of ports on the Adriatic and the Austrian Netherlands (today's Belgium), the colorful destinies of traders penetrating India, China, Arabia and Africa, the establishment and functioning of the Ostend trading company and other trading companies and the foundation of Imperial factors in the Orient. They do not neglect the trade with the Ottoman Empire, Western Europe and the Americas, organized from Trieste and Fiume (Rijeka), or participation in the slave trade in the Caribbean. At the end of the 18th century, the trade of the Habsburg monarchy embraced the whole globe.
