…paper and lead… Sheet music published in 19th century Prague and housed in the collection at the Music Department of the National Library of the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The publication focuses on musical prints from the collection of the Music Department of the National Library of the Czech Republic, which were published in Prague in the 19th century. It opens up the specific issue of their production from several perspectives. The introductory essay briefly introduces the collection of the Music Department of the National Library in which the music in question is housed and its origins. The chapter Prague's musical life in the 19th century in the mirror of the music prints published there presents the musical repertoire encountered in the published music of the period in confrontation with the findings of music historiography. A follow-up text reveals how the composition of the printed repertoire of the time was viewed by some of the educated musicians and culturally aware figures of the nineteenth century. The following chapters turn to the bibliological side and try to unravel the mysteries of the music printing techniques used, which developed rapidly in the period under review on the basis of various experiments. They also introduce those who created and disseminated the local music prints, i.e. Prague booksellers, publishers, engravers, lithographers and printers. The articles are supplemented by reproductions of printed music and references to specific sheet music, mostly presented with more detailed comments in the last part of the publication - the catalogue of the music prints on display.
