The Náprstek Museum's Indonesian Collections and their Collectors

The Náprstek Museum's Indonesian collections are among the museum's oldest collections. Their origin is connected to Vojta Náprstek, the founder of the Náprstek Museum. They were put together chiefly by military doctors of Czech origin who served in theDutch army in Java, Sulawesi and various places in Sumatra, including Aceh and Nias. Other contributors to the collections were travellers of various professions, connected by their personal friendship with Vojta Náprstek. In particular, Pavel Durdík andFrantišek Czurda, another doctor in the service of the Dutch army, created remarkable and systematic collections that document in a substantial way the lives of the ethic groups on the islands of Nias and Sulawesi. It is of considerable importance thatthe Náprstek Museum's library contains archive material relating to the collecting activity of these individuals.
