In the 2nd century B.C., Meroitic script and language became widely used in the inscriptions of the Meroitic kingdom. However, at around the turn of the Eras, Egyptian was reintroduced into some of the royal inscriptions. This renewed interest in Egyptian writing can be associated with intensification of contacts between Meroe and (religious centres in) Egypt, but at the same time can be understood as a means of manifestation of the political program of Meroitic rulers, through which they were represented as the true rulers of the Two Lands.
