Náprstek's America in Prague
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
After Vojta Náprstek returned from 9 years exile in the United States, he started building a public library at the house "U Halánků", situated in the Old Town of Prague. It became a place where meetings of eminent politicians, writers, scientists, and artists took place. Nárstek continued to stay in touch with his Czech friends in America who used to send him their published books, journals, photographs, and posters for the library. Vast archive was also established documenting the lives and activities of Czech Americans. The oldest Czech educational society for women, which became known as the Ladies's American Club, also came into existence in Náprstek's Library. The Czech Americans once again donated exhibits to Náprstek's private industrial museum (established in 1874) documenting both the life of Native Americans and new contemporary technologies. Náprstek, who was called "Amerikán" (the American), himself delivered lectures on America mainly about benefactors who helped in the social and educational field and he urged that Czech society adapt similar practices.
