Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Part 16. Review of the distribution and taxonomy of bats in Egypt
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The most comprehensive list of bat records available from Egypt was compiled from the literature (453 published and unpublished sources), complemented by few records based on examination of museum specimens. The review of the bat records from Egypt includes distribution maps, summaries of distributional status, and reviews of taxonomic opinions concerning the Egyptian populations of the particular species. From the territory of Egypt, at least 524 records of 20 bat species belonging to eight families are known; viz. Rousettus aegyptiacus (Geoffroy, 1810) (88 record sites), Rhinopoma microphyllum (Brünnich, 1782) (12), R. cystops Thomas, 1903 (40), Rhinolophus clivosus Cretzschmar, 1828 (27), R. hipposideros (Borkhausen, 1797) (7), R. mehelyi Matschie, 1901 (8), Asellia tridens (Geoffroy, 1813) (52), Taphozous perforatus Geoffroy, 1818 (26), T. nudiventris Cretzschmar, 1830 (29), Nycteris thebaica Geoffroy, 1813 (32), Eptesicus bottae (Peters, 1869) (11), Hypsugo ariel (Thomas, 1904) (16), Pipistrellus kuhlii (Kuhl, 1817) (77), Vansonia rueppellii (Fischer, 1829) (11), Nycticeinops schlieffenii (Peters, 1859) (2), Otonycteris hemprichii Peters, 1859 (24), Barbastella leucomelas (Cretzschmar, 1830) (8), Plecotus christii Gray, 1838 (33), Tadarida teniotis (Rafinesque, 1814) (13), and Nyctinomus aegyptiacus Geoffroy, 1818 (8). The occurrence of Nycticeinops schlieffenii in Egypt is here doubted based on the evaluation of the available evidence. The previously published restrictions of type localities of Rhinopoma microphyllum, Rhinolophus judaicus Andersen et Matschie, 1904 (= R. mehelyi), Asellia tridens, Taphozous perforatus, Nycteris thebaica, Vespertilio marginatus Cretzschmar, 1830 (= Pipistrellus kuhlii), Vansonia rueppellii, Plecotus christii, Dysopes rueppellii Temminck, 1826 (= Tadarida teniotis), and Nyctinomus aegyptiacus were revised.
