The fossil record of tube-dwelling polychaetes (Serpulidae) is not as well documented in western North America as it is in other parts of the world, and in many cases these fossils have been ignored or assumed to be of little significance. However, the discovery of a new species of Spiraserpula in the upper part of the Pysht Formation on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, USA, allows both the depositional model and age of this part of the formation to be better constained. Spiraserpula iverseni n. sp. is found in a zone of reworked nodules, along with an encrusting coral (Astrangia sp.) and bryozoans, together indicating deposition at a maximum depth of ~50 m. Deposition could not have been continuous as formerly thought because a period of erosion and stasis would be necessary for the accumulation of the concretions and nodules in addition to the colonization of their surfaces by serpulids and corals. We correlate the Spiraserpula localities as corresponding to one or both of worldwide sea level drops at approximately 27 to 28 Ma. This is the first record of Spiraserpula from the eastern Pacific Ocean.
