The National Gallery´s new Permanent Exhibition ? The Art of the Old World, housed in the Kinský Palace ? holds a section devoted to ancient Chinese art. On display in that section are several superb examples of tomb sculpture, dating from the Han Dynasty (206 BC ? 220 AD). An era when the art of the tomb sculpture reached its first peak. One of the artefacts on display in this section of the exhibition is a marble figurine of a bear, dated to the Western Han Dynasty (2nd ? 1st century BC). Even at first glance, the statuette differs noticeably from the ensemble, not only in terms of its overall artistic treatment and material employed, but also its iconography and original purpose that have not yet been satisfactorily explained. Moreover, this is an artwork that has very few-even distant parallels worldwide. The National Gallery purchased the piece in 1986 from a private Czech collections.
