The catalogue showcases works of women from Central Europe, the Netherlands, and Italy, from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century, focusing on painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, as well as applied arts. The book is divided into five chapters: The Monastery, Strong Women from the South, (In)dependent Women from the North, In the Print Workshop, and The Salon. The stories of women - masters and artists – deliver a key message: though their gender influenced the nature of their work and, until recently, limited their access to education and recognition in the regions in question, these artists' talent, skill, diligence, and the will to succeed prevailed. It was only at the end of the nineteenth century that the works of women ceased to be viewed as curiosities or exceptions. The publication also uncovers the surprising courage of medieval women, who were able to express unexpected imagination and deep emotions. The catalogue presents the works of anonymous women as well as European house names, such Empress Maria Theresa and her work in embroidery. The most famous work in the book is The Game of Chess (1555), now an iconic piece of women's art by Sofonisba Anguissola whose talent was admired by Michelangelo himself.
