Publikace analyzuje roli největší české národní banky – Živnostenské banky (dále jen Živnobanka) v Praze – v procesu industrializace českých zemí v období od roku 1869 (rok zahájení činnosti banky) do roku 1914. Jedním z charakteristických znaků vrcholící industrializace konce 19. a počátku 20. století byl rostoucí význam velkých podniků působících zpravidla jako akciové společnosti. Z tohoto důvodu se publikace zaměřuje především na aktivity Živnobanky spojené se zakládáním nových průmyslových podniků ve formě kapitálových obchodních společností, zejména akciových společností, ale i společností s ručením omezeným a družstev (dále jen zakladatelská činnost); transformaci právních forem stávajících podniků, nejčastěji jejich přeměnu na akciovou společnost; a participační aktivity Živnobanky spojené se zvyšováním základního kapitálu podniků. Publikace nejen analyzuje zakladatelské aktivity Živnobanky, ale také interpretuje vztah banky k „založeným“ podnikům ve čtyřech základních analytických dimenzích: 1) vliv banky na valných hromadách podniků, vyplývající z vlastnictví akcií a úschovy cizích akcií; 2) zastoupení banky ve statutárních orgánech obchodních společností; 3) bankovní úvěry podnikům; 4) další formy obchodní spolupráce mezi bankou a podniky. Publikace se rovněž zabývá úlohou Živnobanky při kartelizaci průmyslu Předlitavska. Zabývá se také otázkou mocenských vztahů mezi Živnobankou a zkoumanými společnostmi a mírou, do jaké bylo podnikání banky ovlivněno ekonomickým nacionalismem. Publikace vypráví příběh budování průmyslového koncernu Živnobanky a jeho struktury. Je založena na analýze primárních archivních pramenů, a to jak ze Živnobanky, tak ze samotných podniků.

This publication analyses the role of the largest national Czech bank – the Živnostenská banka (hereinafter called ZIBA) in Prague – played in the process of industrialisation of the Bohemian lands, covering the period from 1869 (the year the bank start-ed its operations) to 1914. One of the hallmarks of the peak industrialisation of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was the growing importance of large companies operating usually as a joint-stock companies. On account of this, the publication focuses primarily on the activities of ZIBA connected with the establishment of new industrial companies in the form of capital business companies, especially joint stock companies, but also limited liability companies and cooperatives (hereinafter called founding activities); transformation of the legal forms of existing companies, most often their conversion into the joint stock company; and participative activities of ZIBA related to increasing the stock capital of companies. The publication does not only analyse the founding activities of ZIBA but also interprets the bank’s relationship with the ‘founded’ businesses in four basic analytical dimensions: 1) the bank’s influence at the general meetings of companies, resulting from stock ownership and safekeeping of other company’s stock; 2) the bank’s representation in the statutory bodies of corporations; 3) bank loans to companies; 4) other forms of business cooperation between the bank and companies. The publication also deals with the role of ZIBA in the cartelization of the Cisleithanian industry. It also addresses the question of the power relationship between ZIBA and the companies under study and the extent to which the bank’s business was influenced by the economic nationalism. The publication tells the story of the building of the industrial concern of ZIBA and its structure. It is based on the analysis of primary archival sources, both from ZIBA and from the companies themselves.
