Böhm had shown a creative approach to photography since his early stay in Germany, as evidenced by his photograph of the Berlin laboratories. Böhm was not the only Czech chemist who pursued photography during his lifetime – there were others such as Karel Kruis, Karel Šmirous, Přemysl Koblic, and Jan Lauschman. During the 1920s–1940s, the quality of photographic materials mostly limited the possibilities of photography. Glass plates and films had poor sensitivity to light and rather coarse film grain, which resulted in insufficient image sharpness. In order to obtain positives without the film grain structure and with tolerable sharpness, largeformat negative material (and devices) was required. Under poor lighting conditions, one had to use a tripod for taking pictures.
