Ladislav Sutnar: Albums of Graphic Design, c. 1925 - 1939
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A previously unpublished and unknown graphic album by Ladislav Sutnar from a private collection in New York is the subject of research into its provenance, datation and destination. On the basis of available archival materials and personal testimonies, the creation of the album is situated in the period of the preparation of the exhibition in the Czechoslovak pavilion at the 1939 World Exhibition in New York, whose installation and, after the establishment of the Protectorate, its de-installation was entrusted to Ladislav Sutnar. The study deals with the author's self-presentation in relation to his work in the USA, his preference for advertising commissions and visual style over book and cultural projects. The portfolio represents an important collection of graphic design and advertising commissions from the 1920s to the 1930s, with previously unknown works dated by the artist himself. The portfolio provides insight into the transformation of the artist's approach to information and graphic design and advertising, and is a testament to the influences and connections between the international design scene and the events in interwar Czechoslovakia.
