A Response to the Commentary by Sterling et al. (2023): “Political Views, Not Science: A Response to the Recent ‘Cancel Culture’ Special Section”
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Our Special Section of essays on “Cancel Culture” in this journal’s January 2023 issue had emphasized the ways in which a growing culture of fear and intimidation can and has harmed scholars’ ability to research, teach, and communicate their topics of interest. We focused not on the evidence for the specifc scientifc claims and views that led to various forms of “cancellation,” but instead on the institutional cultures that permitted and even encouraged personal attacks and punishments rather than good-faith academic debate in response to those views. Sterling et al. (2023)–who apparently not only disagree with, but also disapprove of, our views–have lobbed unfounded accusations at us rather than engage seriously with the substance of our articles. These tactics are some of the same kinds that each of us has experienced from within our institutions and help to illustrate our main points. Examples of such accusations include the idea that we refuse to engage with the scientifc evidence, “hide behind the curtain of science” to advance our own political agenda, and attempt to “deny” the “personhood of a group of people.” Below are our responses to some specifc criticisms and attacks.
