The letter explains the importance of our complementary analysis in which the microbiota mediates the relationship between disease and its consequences. This analysis can reveal important biological patterns that might remain hidden when evaluated using a traditional analytical framework. We believe that mediation analyses can not only significantly improve our understanding of how the microbiota is involved in the health consequences of disease, but can also help develop strategies to improve the quality of life of diseased individuals through targeted interventions in the microbiota.
