Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults: From Research to Clinical Practice
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a lifespan neurodevelopmental disorderthat develops during childhood or early adolescence and frequently persists into adulthood. When ADHD persists into adulthood it is referred to as adult ADHD. The disorder isdefined by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity that interferes with or reduces the quality of functioning in daily life [1]. The impairments of ADHDin adults are often severe and include educational and occupational failure, transportaccidents, difficulty forming social and personal relationships, and the development ofbehavioral problems including antisocial behavior and criminality [2–4]. Many adultswith ADHD struggle with mental health symptoms, such as mental and physical restlessness, distractibility, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, and sleep problems [2].A further source of impairment is the high rate of coexisting disorders associated withADHD [5], including specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia), autismspectrum disorder, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, eating disorders, and addictions. Because ADHD reflects a chronic trait-like condition, the symptomsand impairments are experienced by people with ADHD every day, causing considerabledistress to individuals and their families because of their chronic and persistent nature, further heightening the impact of the disorder if left untreated.
