In der Forschung wird häufig eine astronomische Ausrichtung der Metropole Teotihuacan anhand von Himmelskörpern wie der Sonne oder den Sternen angenommen. Wir möchten mit unserem Beitrag eine Gegenthese dazu aufstellen: Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass fürdie Ausrichtung der Stadt ein magnetischer Kompass benutzt wurde. Auch andere prähistorische Zeremonialzentren wurden auf diese Weise ausgerichtet, Beispiele dafür finden sich sowohl in Mesoamerika, als auch in China. Diese These, sowie neue paläomagnetische Deklinationen oder Missweisungen gestatten es nun, für den Bau der Straße der Toten, welche den Plan der gesamten künftigen Stadt Teotihuacan bestimmt hat, ein früheres Datum anzunehmen. Sie wurde wahrscheinlich bereits 400 v. Chr. angelegt und diente u.a. der Wasserversorgung. Mit einer Simulation von Wasserbecken auf der Straße der Toten möchten wir das Interesse von Spezialisten wecken.

In our article we outline and reject previous views that Teotihuacan was oriented astronomically, for example toward the sun or another prominent star, and instead give evidence that a magnetic compass was used for its orientation. Further support for the magnetic orientation of prehistoric ceremonial centers can be found in Mesoamerica and China. In line with this view and accompanied by new paleomagnetic declinations, we find that the Avenue of the Dead, that dictated the layout of the whole future City of Teotihuacan, was probably set already in 400 BC. Notes on water reservoirs in the Avenue of the Dead are added, along with a simulation, in order to provoke the interest of specialists.
