Summary final report of Challange fund Project Gerogia 2021
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The main goal of the project is the generation of the methodological procedure for debris flow hazard evaluation in model area of Kazbegi municipality, historically known for frequent catastrophic debris flows. This involves the map interactive tool Flow2020 implementation into the activities of NEA which is responsible for the monitoring of geological hazards in Georgia. This interactive software application is used to evaluate susceptibility of individual river basins to debris flow activation. Indispensable parts of the project were field works to obtain field data for the software model to reach final results and to make the field training and share of knowledge with NEA partner. After the theoretical preparation in the Czech Republic, the most important part of the project were two field missions. The first field mission included a theoretical workshop at the beginning and at the end. Intensive field verification work took place in Kazbegi with field training included. The second field mission included a theoretical workshop followed by field work in Kazbegi and then field training around Tbilisi held under the auspices of the UNDP / GCF project representatives when very useful share of knowledge took place there. The main outputs of the project is the interactive web tool Flow 2020 and field works which resulted in series of debris flow susceptibility maps. Also the map of the main types of geological hazards of the Kazbegi area was completed. Results are built and stored in a virtual GIS environment and allow to be updated in the future. An extraordinary result is the joint Czech-Georgian scientific publication which was submitted and will be presented at IAEG XIV Congress 2022 in China. Assessment of geological hazards is very important theme for Georgia. Infrastructure is periodically affected by the strong impact of geological disaster there. In the framework of this project modern methodology for assessment of geological hazards was used, including field geological investigations and newly developed software application. The project is focused on eliminating the hazard associated with frequent catastrophic debris flows causing serious socio-economic damages connected also with a loss of human lives in high-mountainous regions of Georgia. The surroundings of Mount Kazbek are historically known for frequent catastrophic Debris flows that threaten strategic infrastructure. That is why this area was chosen. Also, this area was not included in the national Green Climate Fund project. To deal with geohazards mitigation, a harmonized debris flow hazard assessment methodology will be developed and implemented into the activities of partner organization NEA. The project mediates cooperation between the Czech Geological Survey (CGS) and the Georgian National Environmental Agency (NEA) which is responsible for the monitoring, assessment and mapping of geological hazards in Georgia.
